FORGOTTEN BUFFALO SOLDIERS

  • Pvt. Levi Morris, Co. B, 9th Cav., from Akron, Ohio, age 27. Private Morris died a slow, painful death in 1877, the result of an ax wound to the back inflicted during an altercation with another trooper.

  • Pvt. Thomas Smith, Co. A, 125th Inf., from New Market, Ky., Died in 1866 at the age of 23.  It is believed he died of dysentery, a complication of typhoid fever just two months after arriving at Fort Craig after serving in the Civil War.

  • Pvt. David Ford, Co. C, 38th Inf. from Taylor County, Ky., Died in 1868 of Tuberculosis at the age of 21.

Laid to rest in New Mexico at Fort Craig Post Cemetery
